Additional Details

A promotional broadside for Edward Winslow Martin's sensationalist exposé of New York life. The text explains that "New York City reflects all the good and evil of the land in their most intense forms," and promises helpful information on the city's dance halls, gambling houses, sewers, fortune tellers, and fraudulent stock ventures. The illustrations include several thieves, a dog fight, a fire, and The Tombs, as well as more traditional tourist attractions. One illustration depicts a man being thrown onto the sidewalk by top-hatted thugs, and is captioned "A mock auction--kicked out after being fleeced." As Swann was not founded until 1941, this must depict one of our late competitors.
