lafayette's record of his most famous new york monument. In the summer of 1824 the Marquis de Lafayette undertook a year-long journey around the United States, celebrating the revolution's 50th anniversary. Along the way he was presented with gifts and monuments in his honor. Among the public spaces dedicated to the Marquis was Lafayette Place in lower Manhattan (now Lafayette Street), so named by John Jacob Astor in 1825. Thus, Thomas Longworth's map of the same year might be the first to make note of this change, and would have made an appropriate gift to Lafayette on the occasion.

This is the rarer 1825 edition of the Longworth map of lower Manhattan, originally published in 1817. Haskell records one copy, at NYPL. Haskell, Manhattan Maps, 691.
