Additional Details

A sign produced for a traveling shoe salesman--he wouldn't need to add "from New York" if it was displayed at his own shop. It may have been a maquette photographed for a carte-de-visite advertising card, or just a sign displayed on his cart. A shoemaker named Thomas Dixon appeared in the Brooklyn directories from 1865 through 1904. The calligrapher is credited as [Su?]rrat of 262 Washington Street in New York.
