MICHAEL ROBERTS (1947-2023)
"The Height of Fashion." Collage illustration for the cover of The New Yorker, November 6, 1996. Paper collage. 24 x 19 inches. Monogram in cut paper in lower left image.

Michael Roberts was The New Yorker's first and only fashion director. This work is one of twenty-three covers he created between the years of 1996 and 2007. Roberts' collages were composed of layered shapes, cut freehand, usually working without a sketch. Most of his covers appeared on the magazine's Style & Design issues, which he spearheaded.
