Additional Details

Pages 303-15 contain an anonymous review of the 1687 first edition of Newton's Principia. Although contemporaneous reviews also appeared in Philosophical Transactions, Bibliothèque Universelle, and Journal des Sçavans, the account in Acta Eruditorum was "the most detailed and serious of the four . . . It was comprehensive enough to provide many in Europe without access to Principia itself with a fairly full account of its contents"--Gjertsen, The Newton Handbook, page 472. For Leibnitz's reaction to the review in Acta, see Cohen, Introduction to Newton's 'Principia,' pages 150-56.<
