(NORTH CAROLINA.) Sharpe, Abner. Probate document on an early western North Carolina printed form. Printed form, 12 1/4 x 7 inches, with manuscript completions; moderate dampstaining, folds, docketed on verso. Salisbury, NC: J.M. Slump, printed circa 1798

Additional Details

A very early imprint from the western part of North Carolina. Salisbury's first newspaper, the North-Carolina Mercury, appeared in April 1798, on what appears to be the first press in North Carolina west of Hillsborough and Fayetteville (see Weeks, Press of North Carolina in the Eighteenth Century, pages 46, 49). Sabin lists three Salisbury imprints by Slump, all of them issued in 1798; by 1800 he was printing in Lincolnton.
The document is dated 18 August 1800, and assigns two heirs to provide an inventory of the estate of Robert Hill; it is signed by Abner Sharpe, clerk. The printed text begins with the imprint line, then "State of North Carolina, Iredell County. By the Justices of Iredell County. It being certified to us. . . "
