Additional Details

The island village of Put-in-Bay in Lake Erie north of Ohio is now a popular resort. This descriptive letter was written by a recent arrival, there with her husband and infant daughter: "There is a school house and about forty scholars. They have a lady teacher four months in the year. There is no church or minister. . . . I have met with very few since I came here who seemed to care about having one. There is no doctor here. . . . There are no sawyers or taverns or grocerys or whisky shops of any kind and no place of resort except the store. . . . It will not be but a few years untill this island is one of the richest places in the western country." The island's losses in the Civil War are also discussed.
