Additional Details

Together, two of the earliest and most important claims to land in Oregon. The first, dated 28 January 1839, is signed in print by J. S. Whitcomb and 35 others, who had settled in the region in 1832 claiming to be "the germ of a great State." The second, dated 27 December 1839, by the author of the first Oregon colonization scheme, describes his arduous trip to the region in 1832, admits his financial failures but claims to have created "the first permanent American settlements west of the Rocky Mountains."
