(ORIGINAL COPPER PLATE.) Coronatio Regis et equitum auratorum creatio, Hasniae, post gestum bellum Dithmarsicum eadem aestate, 20 Augusti. Engraved copper plate, with captions in Latin, depicting the 1559 coronation of Frederick II of Denmark. 240x340 mm; generally very good condition, some inking retained in places, upper right corner a bit thinner and very slightly wrinkled. [German-speaking Europe?, circa late 16th century]

Additional Details

Superb image with the royal procession in the foreground, church at upper right, and jousting tournament in the background at left. Although we have not identified any extant printed images from this plate, the orthography, composition, and the subject are consistent with the 16th century. Given the value of copper throughout history, it is very unusual to see a plate of this age; most plates would have been reworked into new images or melted down for other uses.
