Untitled cartoon, likely from Mr. Twee Deedle with an armless character watching two figures (probably Mr. Twee Deedle as indicated by the pointed elf shoes) upside-down in a pool of liquid within a frame of creatures and a castle in the background. Ink and wash, with some pencil notations; 245x180 mm; 9 5/8 x 7 1/4 inches, few light creases, minor spotting, "Puck" stamp dated June 8, 1910 and a blue numerical indication on verso. Additional Details

an important early work by gruelle best known for his Raggedy Ann character which he created 5 years after this image. His first well-known work was Mr. Twee Deedle which he created after beating 1,500 entrants in a cartooning contest sponsored by The New York Herald in 1911. Mr. Twee Deedle was in print from 1911 to 1914.
