Additional Details
Beecher Bowdish was an avid ornithologist who after a few brief stints in the military gained a position as the chief clerk at the fledgling National Audubon Society circa 1904. At the urging of his national director, William Dutcher, Bowdish founded the New Jersey Audubon Society in 1910. In addition to his conservationist work with Audubon, Bowdish served as inspector of entries of birds and animals at the Port of New York for the Fish and Wildlife Service and in 1911 published an illustrated "Guide to the Birds of New Jersey." A man devoted to his passions, he was very active in nature with his camera. The present group represents a wide variety of bird species Bowdish and his cohorts encountered in their natural habitats.
