Additional Details

It is unclear what position Zimmermann held on the ship. The ship left New York, rounded Cape Horn and sailed to Panama where it picked up California bound persons who had crossed the isthmus. The ship seems to have settled into a number of voyages between Pacific ports in Panama and San Francisco. Zimmermann left Pacific Mail service in September 1853 to try his hand at gold digging. He seems to have been unsuccessful. The final two pages of the log are a brief diary of his activities after leaving his employment with the line. Why he retained possession of the ship's log is unknown.
