Additional Details

In 1852, the historian Brantz Mayer delivered an address to the Pennsylvania Historical Society titled "Calvert and Penn; or the Growth of Civil and Religious Liberty in America as Disclosed in the Planting of Maryland and Pennsylvania." Offered here are letters of congratulations he received from prominent figures upon this work, including signed letters from politicians William H. Seward (with franked envelope) and Edward Everett, and perhaps the four leading Americans historians of their era: William H. Prescott, George Bancroft, Francis Parkman, Jr., and Jared Sparks--most of them offering substantial commentary on Mayer's work.
