Additional Details

The larger of the two volumes contains a transcript of the lodge's 1811 by-laws, followed by a membership list spanning 1810 to 1980 with 1157 entries, all but a few of the earliest entries signed by the members. The early entries are annotated in red with membership date and notes such as "deceased" or "resigned." Among the notable signers are #131, the adventurer Josiah Harlan (1799-1871), who was later named Prince of Ghor in Afghanistan; #140, Joseph Cloud (1770-1845), melter and refiner at the U.S. Mint; #337, James Ross Snowden (1809-1878), Director of the U.S. Mint; #345, important physician Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914); and #556, architect Stephen Decatur Button (1813-1897). [109] manuscript pages, original calf, worn and rebacked. In a custom velvet-lined box with clasp and gilt cover title.
The other volume is headed "Rough minutes of association for forming a new lodge of Ancient York Masons." It includes minutes dated October 1810 to April 1811, each page crossed out as it was transcribed into a more formal minute book. At rear is a list of the first 44 members. [61] manuscript pages, contemporary limp calf; minimal wear.
