Additional Details

These photographs depict the construction of the Centennial Exposition's two most iconic buildings, the Main Building and Machinery Hall. The earliest shot, by R. Newell & Sons, is titled "Centennial Grounds 1872 from George's Hill," and shows an vast empty field. Most of the other shots are from 1875, and show the buildings in various phases of construction. A.H. Hemple is credited as the photographer for several of the larger prints. An interesting look at the making of America's first World's Fair.
