This prison was built in 1915 to replace the ancient Western State Penitentiary in Pittsburgh, but both remained open. It is located near Penn State University in the central part of the state. Shown here are a new auditorium, views of the prison's forbidding exterior, ominous basement corridors, the prison's new hydroelectric plant at McBride's Gap, and several views of the renovated Psychopathic Ward, one showing several prisoners and guards.
