Additional Details

An elaborate satire on the local Philadelphia elections of 1867, in which Democrat Peter Lyle defeated the Republican candidate Joseph Cowell in the sheriff's race. A picture of an African-American man is captioned "This is what killed the Republican Party." "Salt River" was a popular Philadelphian euphemism for where defeated politicians were sent. On the verso is an early pencil caption, which underscores the ephemeral nature of this broadside: "Bob, for the love of murcy don't show this trash to any one. I was going over to New York today and found this on the ferry boat." Only one other copy known.
