John Fries was the leader of Fries's Rebellion, a tax revolt in southeastern Pennsylvania. He was sentenced to be hanged, but was pardoned by President John Adams, who later described him and his followers as "obscure, miserable Germans, as ignorant of our language as they were of our laws."
