Additional Details

Edited by Alice Crolley Browning (1907-1985), a longtime Chicago journalist who also published the literary magazine Negro Story. This first issue was produced with associate editor Barbara Browning, her 16-year-old daughter, who served as copy editor and proofreader. Their portraits appear on the rear wrapper. Cornelius Johnson served as art editor. Contents include poems, fables, a crossword puzzle, safety tips, a reading list, and a Negro history column. Readers are encouraged to submit their own articles, photographs and art for inclusion in future issues. This first issue appeared on newsstands in mid-July 1945. It was planned as a monthly, but apparently no other issues were produced. 4 holdings in OCLC, all with only this issue #1; none traced at auction.
