Additional Details

Felipe Manuel Cayetano de Amat y de Junient (1707-1782) served as Viceroy of Peru from 1761 to 1776. Until the creation of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata in 1776, much of Spanish South America was under this viceroyalty, including what are now Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Bolivia. Amat's term included the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767. He wrote this extensive report for his successor Manuel de Guirior. Though it was not published at the time, it circulated widely in manuscript copies such as this. Other copies (with somewhat different titles and pagination) can be found at the Biblioteca Nacional in Spain and at the Newberry Library, and it was finally published as "Memoria de Gobierno" in 1947.
