Additional Details

An important document from the struggle for Peruvian independence, a decree issued by the Chilean general San Martín to José Ignacio Zenteno as naval secretary concerning two troublesome naval officers. Captains Martin Guise and John Tooker Spry, two Englishmen serving in the Chilean navy, had been accused of disloyalty, though Guise had assisted in the heroic capture of the frigate Esmeralda from Spain. Spry had recently been court-martialed, but here is granted the rank of naval adjutant by José de San Martín, a move which upset others in the navy. A long additional note in the left column is signed by Bernardo O''Higgins as supreme director of Chile. with--6 other documents signed by San Martín, 1817-21.
