Lawsuit by Incan royals to maintain control of their traditional lands near Colcabamba. 16 manuscript leaves, 12 1/4 x 8 1/2 inches, numbered 2-17, stitched with remnants of other leaves; apparently lacking the first leaf and an indeterminate number of leaves at the end, minor dampstaining and wear, a few modern repairs. A lawsuit initiated by a trio of Incan lords, two from the royal Yupanqui family: Juan Coniga Yupanqui, Miguel Atao Yupanqui, and Martín Quiga Ococço. They were suing the cabildo of Cuzco for uprooting the maize and other crops they were growing on land near Colcabamba (here spelled Qullqapampa). The great Inca chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega, who left Peru for Spain in 1561, is named on leaf 7 verso as one of the offending parties who had encroached on the land. Testimony dating back to 1561 is included; this partial scribal copy by Juan Gutiérrez de Molina was compiled in 1583. It offers interesting evidence of the Incan royal family's deft legal maneuvers to retain control of their traditional lands under Spanish rule.
