(PHILIPPINES) Group of 31 formal photographs of the Philippines, primarily of native subjects posing for the camera. Silver prints, each approximately 6 1/2x4 1/2 inches (16.5x11.4 cm.), and the reverse, many with the signature of the original collector, dates, a caption, or a Photograph by Bureau of Science hand stamp (2 variants), on verso. Circa 1910
The handwritten notations on verso of these prints are dated between 1909 and 1911 and describe the subject, tribal group, and location. Many also bear the signature of the owner of the photographs, C.C. Bachelder and the date 5/27/24, which may be the year he acquired the prints. Bachelder was an expert in Pacific Commerce. He was Under Secretary of the Interior of the Philippine Islands from 1914-1916, and held later posts in China and India.
