Additional Details

Three days after the official beginning of the Civil War, Nicholes, or "Nick" Biddle was travelling as an orderly to Captain Wren with a newly formed artillery company from Pottsville, Pennsylvania. When they arrived at the Bolton Depot rail station in Baltimore, they found an angry crowd of several thousand Southern sympathizers. According to the newspapers, "pandemonium" soon broke out, and Biddle was struck in the head with a brick, thus making him the first man wounded in the Civil War.
