Additional Details

a rare image of the noted abolitionist, physician, explorer, author, black nationalist and infantry field officer. Martin R. Delany (1812-1885) was one of two explorers sent to the Niger Valley to investigate the possibilities for African American emigration. When the Civil War began, he was instrumental in raising black troops. But above all he is most certainly the first outright proponent of Black Nationalism. Referring to the Niger Valley emigration plan, he said 'We are a nation within a nation; we must go from our oppressors." His 1878 book 'Principia of Ethnology" explored the concepts of racial pride and purity.
