Additional Details

These photographs were all taken by Austin Hansen (1911-1986), dean of Harlem photographers, whose work gained critical recognition toward the end of his life with a touring exhibition. These photographs depict church and community events in Harlem, which were Hansen's bread and butter. They include an adult sorority luncheon, a presentation of toys to the pediatric ward at Harlem Hospital, the crowd at a special screening of Harry Belafonte's film Bright Road, and a remedial reading clinic at a local school. Most of the events were sponsored by the Harlem-based Beta Epsilon chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa sorority. These photographs come from the papers of Lenon Hoyte, the famed "Doll Lady of Harlem" (see lot 401); she is featured in many of the images. The lot also includes 11 letters and documents relating to the photographs, as well as contemporary caption slips for a few. While the photographs themselves are undated, they all seem to come from a 1955 album.
