Karsh shot a series of portraits for a 4 October 1954 Life Magazine article titled "Portraitist in France," which featured another Picasso portrait from this same sitting. On the shoot: "Karsh had come to Picasso's pottery workshop in Vallauris expecting a difficult time with a temperamental subject, but Picasso proved so cooperative as to seem 'abnormally normal.' . . . Picasso arrived exactly on time. Later the reason came out: he had seen some Karsh portraits and liked them." This print was received by the Daily Mirror in London in April 1955.
