William Stetson Kennedy (1916-2011) was a well-known white Floridian author with an interest in folklore and human rights; he is best known for infiltrating the Ku Klux Klan in 1947 and aiding in their prosecution. This snapshot shows an African-American man staring at a sign reading "Colored Area. Dogs Not Permitted in Zoo Grounds." On verso, Kennedy has captioned in his own hand "Jacksonville Municipal Zoo, Photo by Stetson Kennedy ca 1964."
