Additional Details

This photograph shows President John F. Kennedy meeting on the White House south lawn with an unidentified delegation of Black leaders. One of them is apparently presenting him with a gift. The photographer Maurice Sorrell (1914-1998) became the first Black member of the previously segregated White House News Photographers Association in 1961, after Kennedy expressed his support at a press conference. Sorrell worked for the Washington Afro-American through mid-1962, and then his work appeared in Jet and Ebony through his retirement in 1993.
