Additional Details

The wooden centerpiece has "Sadie T. Jones" carved in relief below the photograph, and a small mirror is set in above. It is laid atop a chromolithographed Christmas scene, and is encased in a carved wooden box frame. The backing board and nails appear undisturbed and likely from the early to mid 20th century.

We cannot be certain who Ms. Jones was, or who produced this elaborate tribute. However, we find exactly one Sadie T. Jones listed as Negro in the 1910 through 1950 census. She was Sadie Twyner Jones (1873-1954) of Meridian, Mississippi, widow of the Rev. Robert Napolean Jones (1869-1930). She was listed as a teacher in the 1920 census, an insurance collector in 1930, and a school lunchroom helper in 1940. She appears in the 1953 directory for the nearby town of Lauderdale, MS. Her daughter and niece were also teachers, according to the census. The woman in this photograph might plausibly be a retired Mississippi teacher in the early 1950s--or it may be a different Sadie T. Jones altogether.
