Additional Details

This photograph depicts 23 African-American miners and a pair of slightly better-dressed white men in the back, presumably foremen. They are posed with a variety of mining implements in front of the shed housing the mine's hoist. A few of the miners appear to be quite young. The name of mining magnate George Hearst (1820-1891) appears on verso. Hearst owned an interest in several mines, most notably the Ontario Silver mine near Park City, UT. The photograph was found at an estate in Idaho.
