Additional Details

The central figures in this archive are Walter Horace Thompson (1885-1968), and his wife Estelle Cardwell Thompson (1885-1969). Walter was a Long Island native, while Estelle was born in Washington, DC. They lived in Setauket, Long Island from about 1915 to 1925, and then Walter became a caretaker at a private estate in nearby Port Jefferson from 1930 to 1940. They had three children; one photograph is inscribed to their daughter Marie. Several of the photographs are by Greene of Port Jefferson, including one of a drummer posing with his kit; others are from Brooklyn and further afield. Few are identified, though one is marked 'Mrs. Thompson' and another is to Estelle from 'your sweetheart Frank' in 1908. Accompanying the photographs are two A.M.E. hymnals with ownership inscriptions by the Thompsons, a program for an A.M.E. conference in Alabama in 1942, a 1938 issue of The New Day (the Father Divine magazine), and a program for the 'Regimental Day' of the segregated 372nd Infantry Regiment held in New York in 1944.
