Addison N. Scurlock (1883-1964), photographer was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. His father George, a politician moved the family to Washington in 1900. There, young Addison apprenticed with white photographer Moses Rice. In 1904, at the age of 21, he opened his own studio, focusing on the African-American community. By the second decade of the century, Addison Scurlock had become one of Washington''s premier photographers.
