Additional Details

Addison Scurlock (1883-1964) was born in Fayettesville, S.C. to George H. Scurlock, politician. When he was seventeen, Scurlock's father moved the family to Washington D.C. where he was employed by the Treasury Department. Fascinated by photography, young Addison soon apprenticed with Moses Rice, a white photographer and in 1904, opened his own studio out of the family home on Florida Avenue. Scurlock concentrated on the black community and became the official photographer for Howard University, a position he held until his death. Over the years, many black notables sat for Scurlock portraits, including Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. Du Bois, Marion Anderson and many others.
