first editions, inscribed to gordon parks. The first volume is signed by Van Der Zee and inscribed by Camille Billops, who wrote the Introduction, "To the 'Best,' with my best, Camille Billops." The second volume bears a long inscription from Van Der Zee "To Gordon, with best wishes and kind appreciations, your faithful servant, James Van Der Zee, 1886-1900-1976+ Lenox Mass & N.Y.C., Aug. 26, 1976." Van Der Zee was ninety years old when he inscribed this book.
