Additional Details

A classic portrait from the premier Harlem photography studio. James Van Der Zee (1886-1983) was born in Lenox, Massachusetts. He founded the "Guarantee Photo Studio," later GGG--a combination of his wife's name, Gaynella Greenlee and "Guarantee." While best known for his straightforward portraiture, over the years Van Der Zee developed a quirky style that often involved double-exposure and the imposition of one image over another. This is especially pronounced in his postmortem photos, where angels might be found hovering above the deceased.
