a rare and unusual image, capturing the spirit of the times. This couple were no doubt abolitionists, and perhaps even underground railroad conductors. They sit together, the husband holding a copy of the Emancipator. Note: the lettering on the masthead is, of course, reversed. We have only seen one other early photograph involving a piece of abolitionist material; in that case, a much later tintype and a book on the history of the slave trade.
