(PHOTOGRAPHY--EARLY AND CASED IMAGES.) A rare opalotype image of a well-dressed young boy and his seated 'Mammy.' Photograph, 4-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches; some very slight wear at the corners, with no case. American South, circa 1860-1865

Additional Details

The Opaltype or Opalotype process was patented by Glover and Bold of Liverpool in 1857. The technique, while producing a soft, painting-like effect, never really caught on. As a result good images are not at all common. This portrait shows the tremendous affection and connection that often existed between the "Mammy", or "Nanny" as they were sometimes called and the children they raised.
