(PHOTOGRAPHY--EARLY AND CASED IMAGES.) ASMARA—ERITREA, AFRICA. 'Your sister.' Large cabinet card photograph of an Italian family with two children; behind the children and between the parents is a very dark, teen-aged girl. A long inscription on the reverse begins 'Tua Sorella Rosina" [your sister Rosie]. Eritrea, circa 1906-1920

Additional Details

The note found on the reverse of this photograph was probably written there years later when the mother or father was identifying who was who among the family photographs. After stating that Rosina was the children's sister, the mother goes on to say that she (the young girl) was actually the dear daughter of their maid Popina. It is possible that they adopted her. This photo probably dates from the 1890's to 1910 or so. Eritrea was an Italian colony at this time.
