Np, circa late 1860's-1870's

Additional Details

This would be a most unusual photograph, simply because of the intimacy shown by the black woman toward her white friend. But there is something more striking yet: they are wearing the same dress pattern, one in a dark material, the other in white. 'Why,' you might ask? The answer lies in what the black woman is wearing on her wrist. Just beneath the diamond design on the cuff of her left arm, there is a round pin-cushion of the type commonly used by seamstresses for easy access to pins while hemming and measuring. Their intimacy suggests a real friendship, their clothing and the pincushion suggests a business partnership.
