LIFE & DEATH AT A LIBERIAN MISSION (PHOTOGRAPHY--RELIGION.) Methodist Episcopal Mission, Liberia. Group of four mounted 5x7 silver print photographs with inked captions on the reverse. Liberia, 1904-1907

Additional Details

A touching group of photographs that tell a story. The inked captions on the reverse indicate that they were taken at a Methodist Episcopal mission on the Sinoe River in Liberia between 1904 and 1907. They show "Uncle James'' Church," a tiny building made of corrugated iron sheets; "Aunt Frieda''s School, a large building made of the same material with a wrap-around porch, "a newly married native couple, Jack Town Mission, Sinoe Co., Liberia, West Africa. 1904," and finally "Uncle James Robertson''s grave, Jack Town, Sinoe River, West Africa." The tombstone reads "Here is resting James Bowie Robertson, who came as a missionary to Africa in 1850. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1835. Died September 27, 1907." A group of little children stand at the grave site with the minister''s widow.
