The Afro-American was published from 1941 to 1991. These photographs by Wells Rainey are representative of Newark's black community from the earliest years. Civic events, local business, Jersey Shore, Union pickets, night life etc. Each envelope bears Rainey's logo of himself with a Speed Graflex camera. A wonderful cross-section of New Jersey's vibrant African American community during WWII and a few years following.
