first english edition, and first edition of the scarce separately-issued Volume II. A tremendously influential source of pirate facts and legends. The great pirate Sir Henry Morgan, then retired from the privateering life in Jamaica, filed a libel suit against the publishers and won £200. Provenance: bookplates of the pirate historian Philip Gosse (1879-1959), presumably acquired after 1926, as this copy does not appear in his My Pirate Library published in that year. Church 689; European Americana 684/54 and 685/146; Hill 578 (first volume only); Palau 85733-4; Sabin 23479.
