Additional Details

Allen Allensworth (1842-1914) was an ex-slave, Union soldier, restaurateur, lecturer, Freedmen's Bureau educator and Military chaplain. Allensworth lectured throughout the South during the latter part of the 19th century. He created the California Colony and Home Promotion Association in order to found the town of Allensworth, located in Tulare County in the state's Central Valley. Allensworth became the first all-African-American township in California, founded and financed by black citizens. In this letter, he offers his services to the Republican Party's candidate, James Blaine in the 1884 presidential campaign.
