(POLITICS.) HOOVER, HERBERT. President Hoover Offers a New Deal to Colored Race. Oblong, pictorial broadside, 8x14 inches; crease where folded; a few wrinkles; paper evenly toned. Washington, 1932

Additional Details

An historic moment. It was the onset of the Great Depression, and like today a disproportionate number of blacks were unemployed and saw no immediate promise of work on the horizon. President Hoover, trying desperately to hang on to the traditionally Republican black voter agreed to meet with black leaders on the White House lawn. This broadside shows that meeting, obviously an unsuccessful one because blacks began for the first time to move away from the Republican Party and toward the Democratic Party. Roosevelt won the election, and a considerable number of black voters.
