Additional Details

These letters were written to the National Republican Committee by James Milton Turner (1839-1915) wherein Turner lists the locations where he would be able to speak on behalf of James Blaine and the Republican ticket. Many African American speakers traveled the country campaigning for Blaine, who lost to Grover Cleveland by a very narrow margin. Turner was born into slavery in St Louis. He served as a body servant to Colonel Madison Miller during the Civil War and was wounded at the battle of Shiloh. After the war he studied at Oberlin and became the first African American diplomat serving in Liberia.
