Additional Details

A very nasty cartoon that even the Dallas Times Herald refused to run; marked "return" and "destroy" on the reverse. Adam Clayton Powell Jr. (1908-1972) was one of the most powerful African-American politicians of the 20th century. Following in his father's footsteps as minister of Harlem's famous Abyssinian Baptist Church, Powell became increasingly involved in politics, and in 1944 was elected to the U. S. Houses of Representatives, New York's first African-American Congressman. In the late 1960's however, Powell high-flying lifestyle became the subject of investigation and scandal. Instead of returning to New York, he chose to stay at his posh Florida retreat. Stripped of his committee chairmanship by the House Democratic Caucus, Powell told his constituents to "Keep the Faith Baby."
