Additional Details

one of the earliest agreements between waddell and russell. According to this document, Waddell, Russell and Charles Morehead (Russell's nephew) had entered into an agreement of partnership in December 1852. This agreement supersedes the former, naming Waddell & Russell as the successor to the previous company. In addition to their business as Lexington, MO outfitters, this agreement specificies that the new firm would "continue same style of firm in the freighting business" but that Waddell would receive 25% of the profits and Russell the remaining. In 1853, the year of this agreement, Waddell and Russell became the leading civilian freighters of military supplies to the West, principally delivering to Fort Riley in Kansas Territory and Fort Union in New Mexico. See Settle, War Drums, page 37.
no earlier agreement between waddell and russell is located in the waddell collection, huntington library.
