(PORT RICHMOND, PHILADELPHIA, PA)
Pair of large albums containing 98 photographs surveying the predominantly Polish and Irish-American working-class neighborhood of Port Richmond in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Apparently photographed to document the infrastructure of the neighborhood, depicting homes and businesses, the albums inadvertently portray the deserted streets of this locale, and capture a barren sense of daily life and lingering community. In certain images children can be seen curiously peering outwards over the windowsill of a home, and in others the ghost-like outline of a carriage or passer-by is frozen in the frame as the embodiment of a fleeting moment. Silver prints, the images measuring 10x12 3/4 inches (25.4x32.4 cm.), mounted recto/verso, each with a negative number and date in the negative, and with detailed location captions, in ink, on the mount below each image. Oblong folios, black leatherette. 1907
