(PRESIDENTS.) Archive of slides taken by a White House press corps photographer from the Kennedy through Carter administrations. Approximately 1100 color slides housed in 13 carousels, generally uncaptioned but most with date stamps; condition generally strong. Various places, 1963-1977
These color slides were taken by a member of the White House press corps, most of them from the Lyndon Johnson and early Richard Nixon presidencies, with a handful from Kennedy and Carter. Some personal slides and non-White House news images are interspersed.
Ten of the slides show President Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy in Dallas, apparently on the day of the assassination in November 1963. One shows the motorcade with Dallas street signs in the background, and three show the President and First Lady.
Among the many images of President Johnson, some are from a July 1968 trip to dedicate a school in Guatemala, and some are from his July 1968 visit to San Antonio World's Fair / HemisFair. Nixon's presidency is represented by 1969 state visits to Thailand and Romania; one shows him on a podium listening to a speech by Romania's Nicolae Ceausescu. Another shows him at a golf club with Bob Hope. One carousel is largely devoted to Pat Nixon's January 1972 state visit to Liberia, Ghana, and the Ivory Coast in Africa. We have spotted no images of the Ford presidency, and just a handful from Carter's first few months. We have examined only a small portion of these slides; someone with a working slide projector will likely find many other interesting highlights.
The slides are uncredited, but are accompanied by a photo of President Johnson signed and inscribed to UPI photographer and sound technician Jack C. Schultz (1915-1986), a member of the White House News Photographers Association. The photograph shows Johnson in the foreground, with Schultz wielding a camera in the background. It bears the inked stamp of official White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton and 15 January 1965 date stamp on verso, and is signed and inscribed "To Jack Schultz, with best wishes, Lyndon B. Johnson," 11 x 14 inches.
Also included are two photographs of President Nixon, with apparently secretarial signatures; and a print of a painting by Dwight D. Eisenhower, captioned on the mat "St. Louis Creek, Byers Peak Ranch," signed in facsimile by Eisenhower, Christmas 1955.
